Berkey Water Purifier-Filter
Berkey Purifiers Alert
Berkey water purifiers have been one of our most popular products for many years, and their production has now been halted by the EPA. At Pleasant Hill Grain we believe Berkey purifiers are the most effective, highest quality purifiers on the market. But in some areas (mainly California), government authorities have sought for years to curtail Berkey sales. Those government authorities have offered their justifications, while many others have seen very different motives.
The latest move is that the U.S. EPA has now declared that Berkey water purifiers are a pesticide (seriously…), and therefore under their regulatory authority. Berkey is currently under a government order to cease production. As a result, we (and all distributors) are unable to order more Crown, Imperial, or Royal stainless systems, and these models are now out of stock. We can can still order Berkey Light, Big, and Travel—but these remaining Berkey systems are likely to run out soon as well. Berkey has made it very clear that the regulations the government is moving to put in place would mean the end of Berkey.
Berkey’s stock of separate purifier elements is exhausted, and distributors cannot order more.
Berkey is now suing the EPA in federal court in an effort to overturn their policy. It’s unknown when a ruling will be made, and if the EPA decision is allowed to stand, then we expect any remaining Berkey stocks to sell out in days if not hours. So if you want to ensure your personal supply of Berkey systems and replacement elements, our advice is that now is the time to do that. You can read Berkey’s recent statement on these developments here, and see an interview of Berkey owner Jim Shepherd by Emerald Robinson here.
Berkey Water Purifiers
The world's most powerful and economical water purification systems, Berkey® purifiers provide incredibly clean, pure water whether the source is a wild stream, stagnant pond, private well, or substandard municipal supply. Available in sizes large enough for the sustained needs of up to 325 people per system, Berkey purifiers rely on no moving parts and use no electricity.
Easy to use
Just fill the upper chamber with water. Gravity carries water through the Black Berkey purifying elements and incredibly pure water rains down into the Berkey's lower chamber where it's ready for you to use.
Contaminated Drinking Water
A recent national study found 316 different contaminants in U.S. drinking water. Berkey purifiers remove pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites while extracting chemicals including herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOCs, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment, foul tastes and odors. They reduce heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminum as well as nitrites, without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs.
Proprietary Micro-Pore Technology
Berkey purifiers use proprietary micro-pore technology to achieve contaminant reduction of 99.99999%. This extreme level of purification, called “7-log” reduction, means that no more than one part per ten million of the original contaminant remains. This standard is 1000 times more stringent than what's required to label a system as a simple “water filter.” Systems achieving 7-log reduction provide ultra-pure water not only in normal conditions, but also in circumstances of extreme and highly dangerous contamination. And unlike many purifiers, Black Berkey elements are cleanable: A Scotchbrite™ pad is all you need to remove exterior buildup and extend element life. Each element can clean up to 3000 gallons of water.
Black Berkey Media
The media within Black Berkey® elements removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon called adsorption, the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. The exclusive purification elements are also impregnated with proprietary media that promote ionic absorption of pollutants within the micro-porous elements. A key reason Berkey systems are so effective in removing contaminants from water is their long contact period. Most systems blast water through their filters at high pressure, which limits contact with their filter media to only a fraction of a second. Water molecules passing through the revolutionary micro-porous structure of the Black Berkey purification elements are drawn gently by gravity and remain in contact with the trapping media for several minutes. This multiplies the Black Berkey filter media's ability to capture contaminants.
Reducing Bacteria
Berkey purifiers using the Black Berkey purification elements are proven to reduce pathogenic bacteria (including E. Coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Giardia and Cryptosporidium) by 99.99999%. Berkey systems have been tested with the highest pathogenic contamination levels that can be produced in a laboratory. When contamination levels exceed a billion pathogens per liter of water (10,000 times the density of contamination used in the standard test protocol for bacteriological removal) they're classified as TNTC (too numerous to count.) Under normal testing protocol, one pathogenic organism is tested at a time, each with a fresh purifying element. For this test, however, the laboratory was directed to combine three separate pathogenic TNTC cultures. Tested under this extreme contamination level, absolutely no pathogens were able to make it through the purification elements. The laboratory then incubated the water, and nothing grew. When the purified water was viewed under an electron microscope not even inviable microbes were detectable—nothing was present but pure water. Furthermore, contaminants including trihalomethanes, radon 222, and volatile organic compounds including benzene, 2,4-D, Heptachlor, MTBE, styrene, tetrachloroethylene and toulene, among many others, were reduced to below detectable limits.
Reducing Viruses
Far smaller than bacteria, viruses typically range upward in size from about 30 nanometers (nm). Black Berkey purification elements have been proven in independent testing to reduce the MS2 and Fr Coliphage viruses, which are among the smallest viruses at about 25nm, to Log 5 (99.999%). No other gravity fed water filtration system even comes close to this performance. The striking superiority of Berkey water purifiers can be demonstrated with food coloring. When bacteria are viewed under a powerful microscope, food coloring is often used as a contrast enhancer to make the bacteria easier to see. Food coloring consists of particles so small that even under magnification strong enough to show fine details in a single bacterium, the food coloring still appears only as uniform coloration. Yet Berkey purifiers effectively remove food coloring from water. Berkey systems are the only purifiers in the world that can do this.
Soft water
The Black Berkey® purification elements are designed to remove heavy metals, but will not remove mineral salts, which are added by a water softener. The salt used to soften water will not be extracted by the Black Berkey® element. We recommend that you use softened water directly from the source rather than running it through the Black Berkey® elements.
Configurations
Berkey purifiers are available in several configurations. All Berkey Systems using Black Berkey purifying elements meet or exceed the EPA's stringent "7 Log" (99.99999%) contaminant reduction specification. Systems using Black Berkey elements within transparent Copolyester housings are known as Berkey Light Purifiers. Systems using Black Berkey elements within 304-grade stainless steel housings have the same purifying performance, and are known as Berkey Stainless Purifiers.

Total Virus Control
Black Berkey® filtration systems are an integral part of the ideal solution for treating virus-contaminated water supplies. The accepted standard for using chlorine to kill waterborne viruses is 2 PPM (2 parts of chlorine per 1 million parts of water.) 2 PPM is achieved by adding 8 drops of straight chlorine (common chlorine bleach) to 1 gallon of water. For "good measure" the recommendation is often made to use up to 16 drops per gallon. But who wants to consume all of that chlorine? Berkey® Purifiers solve this dilemma. Black Berkey® elements remove the chlorine from the treated water after the chlorine has completely killed any viruses present. You're left with only what you want... ultra pure, ultra safe, great tasting water!
The glass on the left, of the picture to the left, contains dirty water straight form a pond. The glass on the right of the picture contains water from teh same pond, after it was purified in a Berkey system.
The Black Berkey filter formulation has been tested by state & EPA accredited laboratories. Click to see some of those test results, from Spectrum Labs and the University of Arizona.

I love this thing, but I ended up with a puddle because there is no indication that the lower vessel is full and that no further water should be added.
For the past ten years, I have been traveling throughout South America, living the expat lifestyle. It's been wonderful! What is the one thing I would NEVER FORGET to pack in my luggage? My Berkey Water Filter! You never know when your water source may be unreliable and that includes those of you who use the same tap water every day! But wherever my travels took me, I knew I could drink any water that had been purified by my Berkey. And when I left Ecuador in March to return to the US? Yep, I was able to sell my Berkey to another gringo down there for exactly the same price for which I'd paid for it originally. That's how well-known and respected the Berkey brand is, throughout the world! So go ahead and buy with confidence in the product and its value maintaining over time. The folks at Pleasant Hill are my only source for obtaining anything Berkey. They are the best, too!
We love our Big Berkey. It does a great job, filters quickly, and is well made. Just a few things I wish were different. I wish we had bought a bigger size. It's just two of us, and we end up filling it up at least 2x per day. I also wish that the upper compartment had a small lip around the base that extended below the filter threads so that you could set it off to the side while it was upright. The only other issues are with emptying it. The upper compartment doesn't drain all the way down. I imagine it's to keep sediment from clogging the filters and to allow that to settle out for cleaning, and the bottom compartment had to be tilted to drain the water out of it. A simple 90 degree elbow for a side pickup would help with that. The lack of complete drainage and pickup, combined with the inability to set the upper compartment to the side while standing upright, seems trivial at first, but when you are filling it multiple times per day, it becomes an inconvenience especially if you don't drain the bottom before you fill the top.
I've been looking to buy a Berkey Water Filter for years, and it has not let me down. I enjoy not smelling my water! I have to mention Pleasant Hill Grain's customer service, they were awesome when I called on a Saturday morning with a couple issues I had, they were great! I wouldn't ever hesitate ordering from Pleasant Hill again, and will... need more filters for my Berkey : )
I became concerned about the chlorine in our city water, so began my mission to find a way to filter our water without a whole house system which could be costly. We're happy we found the Berkey water purifier and recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their drinking water.
I purchased three of the Big Berkies for my family. My son and daughter are absolutely in love with the quality of the water and the convenience of having that water right at their finger tips. My husband and I drink nothing else but Berky water, it's just so convenient for us. Thank you so much for making these available online with super fast shipping.
I received this as a gift for my birthday last year and I am thankful that I did. I didn't purchase it because we had bad water or anything. However, I do not own a TV and wasn't sure when my area would need to boil water....it seemed to happen frequently. After getting the Berkey I didn't have to wonder about that any longer. Also, we just moved to Germany and my Berkey is something I wanted to take with me to arrive early. Here in Germany, I haven't met one person who drinks their tap water, everyone buys water....except my family: -)....we gladly drink our wonderful tasting Berkey-filtered water. As far as how it works. I am very satisfied. I purchased the stand so that we can put our cups on the counter to fill up under the spigot. I'm glad I did. We bought the Royal Berkey and we have 9 kids. We could have purchased a bigger one, but I didn't want it to be too big, seeing as it would be setting on my counter. We do have to fill it a few times a day, but that doesn't bother me. I love my Berkey and recommend getting the stand to go with it.
The Crown BERKEY water filter I ordered from Pleasant Hill Grain is wonderful. the water is very pure and great tasting and it's very easy to use. Just turn the spigot. The Pleasant Hill Grain people I spoke to on the phone were very kind and professional. I would recommend this to everyone.
We've been very pleased with our Berkey purifier. It's great to know that we're drinking pure, uncontaminated water every day. We plan to take it on our 3 week long cross-country trip!
We've had a Berkey in our home for over 10 years! We love it! I've recently ordered one for my office. The water tastes great!
