So far have run 5 lbs of hard red winter wheat through the mill attached to a kitchen aid mixer. Used the finest setting as I was making flour for a bread maker. Grind was perfect and the loaf came out beautifully- but with a much better depth of flavour.
With the kitchen aid I tried a batch on stir and a batch on 2. Could not see much difference in how quickly it ground, but heat build up in the kitchen aid went from warm on stir to moderately hot on 2. So sticking with stir for now.
No regrets this far, and considering buying the handle and base for any power out-situations.
We were not ready to spend a lot for a new mill so when we found this attachment for our Bosch as an option we jumped on it. So far we have been pleased. It is easy to attach to the Bosch and we are impressed by its versatility in milling fatty seeds. It may not be a lifetime mill (we hope it is) but it fits our needs just fine for now.
I already own FGM flaker and hand crank base. I wanted to order the grain mill. Free shipping and great prices prompted me to order from Pleasant Hill Grain. I placed my order. Then I realized I could get a replacement clamp from them. I went into my account and got on chat with them and they added the clamp to my order since it had not shipped yet and saved me shipping fee since the clamp was under $50. Thanks. Package arrived just as they said.
I’ve had two Cereal Mill attachments for my Bosch Compact. They didn’t hold up well, and we couldn’t get the broken part replaced. I bought this Family Grain Mill and it works beautifully!! It looks very well made so I think this one will hold up better. I’m very happy with it. Three months later: I’m very happy with this cereal mill attachment. Once I figured out how to attach it to my Bosch Compact, it works VERY nicely. It has a very good range of settings from very fine to very coarse.
I actually have two of these, the one purchased from here on 10/15/12 and an older one. I own a Nutrimill but what I love the FGM for is grinding coarse corn meal from the field corn I buy on this website. The Nutrimill won't do it that coarse. Of course, it makes great flour also and is a joy for someone who may not have much kitchen space.
This works really well as a grain grinder, love that it can be used both with electric power and manually if living off the grid.
Having acquired this in the midst of Yuletide baking, I immediately put this to use. I specifically purchased this for its ability to grind poppyseeds, and I'm happy to report it did not disappoint. I connected it to my Bosch Compact and found that the setting of "2" on my grain head dial did the trick. (My 65+ y. o. arm and shoulder were most grateful that I didn't have to use the non-electric grinder this year and that I actually could set up this new device without anything more than the directions that came with it!!) I can't wait to try it with some field dent corn as recommended by one of the reviewers- my next highly anticipated use. Incidentally, I found that a clean, dry pastry brush made the easy-to-clean grain head apparatus even easier to clean following the grinding of rice which is recommended following the grinding of poppyseeds.
Because this has eased a wearying task, my Hungarian husband will want his favorite "Poppyseed (Makos) Beigli" at Easter as well, and I'll make them gladly!!
You really can't beat the versatility of the family grain mill, especially when you consider the price. We had one and used it heavily for years. Finally, the wear and tear of twenty years wore down some of the plastic and we had to replace the grain head. The new one works great - just like the one we got twenty years ago! We use it with our Bosch Universal mixer, and it does a fantastic job.
Great addition to our food workshop. Easy to disassemble/clean and reassemble, very versatile: I was surprised by the fine flour it could produce, as well as its excellent performance cracking grains. I bought the FGM grain mill attachment to supplement my other milling tools particularly for its steel burr that can mill peppers, coffee beans, and spices, as well as grains and beans, by hand. My 1990s little “Back to Basics” mill served this auxiliary function for two decades, also saving many meals for us during the frequent power outages we experience living among big trees in the PNW Winter Cyclone Corridor. But when the nylon bushing on the B2B’s main shaft cracked, I had no idea whether or when another could be found. So we decided to grab the FGM mill as part of a package deal from PHG when shopping for the “Jupiter system” flaker and food processor. That system was meant to backstop/retire our 250-watt KitchenAid stand mixer, bought as a refurb from a Silicon Valley Fry’s…and getting tired with heavy use after 30-plus years milling grain, grinding meats, mixing, etc. Since then I’ve found a place that sells that B2B bushing, which is exciting…but we will keep the FGM/Jupiter mill head while repairing the B2B. The FGM mill head is just a great tool, perfectly complementing our stone-burr Mockmill.
I'm very pleased with my purchase. The products were fairly priced, were high quality, and shipped promptly.
