The Grain Milling attachment for the Family Grain Mill grinds soft or hard wheat, oat groats (dehulled oats), rice, triticale, kamut, spelt, dent (field) corn, dried sweet corn, split peas, buckwheat, barley, rye, millet, teff, quinoa, amaranth, sorghum, dry beans, lentils, chopped chestnuts, soybeans, flax, sesame, coffee, and some herbs and spices. It will also crack grain to any size—you can set the adjustment dial to any consistency from fine flour to meal to cereal grind or cracked grain. It isn't suitable for popcorn, tapioca pearls, or saw palmetto berries. To read more about millable materials, click here.

The Flaker Mill head flakes soft grains and is popular for fresh homemade oatmeal, making a hearty flake from oat groats (oats with the hulls removed) that's thicker and chewier than store-bought flaked oats. Hopper is 6 x 3.5 inches (dia. x height).

Oats are a naturally soft grain and more of our customers roll oats than any other grain in their Family Grain Mill flaker—but many other grains including wheat, rye, barley and millet can be flaked too, with a little preparation. These grains are hard and brittle, and would normally shatter rather than crush. To soften them, hold them under running water briefly in a strainer. Then spread the grains on a cloth or towel to let them dry over night or for 3-4 hours. This time will vary depending on the grain used, but a little experimentation will help optimize the process. The softened grain will crush and flatten, rather than shattering. At the same time this contact with water starts an enzymatic process which makes it easier for you to assimilate the minerals in the grain.

The Food & Meat Grinder attachment for the Family Grain Mill includes 4.5MM disk for ground meat and a knife.

Tip: Be sure your meat is chilled to near freezing (but with none of it actually frozen) before grinding. This both reduces the load on the motor and improves the quality of your ground meat.

All metal parts are stainless steel.

this base is well made and easy to use. The only flaw I find is with only one clamp for the countertop it is a bit unstable while I am cranking.

This manual base makes grinding cheese, pototoes and nuts a snap. Add it to your purchase even if you want the electric version. I just use this manual base for the food processer and flocker. Easy to turn. Very sturdy construction.
