Family Grain Mill Combo H4
Motor Base Supply Note
The original-style Family Grain Mill motor base has been discontinued by the U.S. importer. However, the WonderMix Revolution Mixer is available, and is actually a superior alternative because it has more power and a lower price than the old motor base had. FGM components fit onto the WonderMix in exactly the same way as they did on the old motor base.

The Family Grain Mill offers multi-grain milling and exceptional versatility. Its grind is infinitely adjustable, from fine for bread flour, to medium for "Cream Of Wheat" style cereals, or coarse for steel cut or cracked grain. It will also mill some chopped, dry, non-oily herbs and spices. The Family Grain Mill grinds cool to preserve nutrients, and has a large five cup hopper capacity.
The German-built Family Grain Mill is a modular system, giving you drive choices of electric power or available hand crank option. Any combo can be ordered from the drop-down menu at the top of this page, and the combo table (on this page, below) shows which components each combo includes. The hand crank base can also be purchased lower on this page.
In addition to the grain milling head, several other components expand the abilities of the FGM system. The Food Processor slices and shreds vegetables, nuts, fruits and cheese with interchangeable stainless steel drums. The Flaker Mill head flakes soft grains and is popular for fresh homemade oatmeal, making a hearty flake from oat groats (oats with the hulls removed) that's thicker and chewier than store-bought flaked oats. You can see an interior image and more details on the flaker mill attachment here. The Food & Meat Grinder is available with a variety of disk sizes, to grind and mince almost any type of food you can think of.

Use the electric or WonderMix base, or drive adapters that fit many leading stand mixers.
Processing components include flour mill, grain flaker, food processor and meat/food grinder.
The Grain Mill head grinds soft or hard wheat, oat groats (dehulled oats), rice, triticale, kamut, spelt, dent (field) corn, dried sweet corn, split peas, buckwheat, barley, rye, millet, teff, quinoa, amaranth, sorghum, dry beans, lentils, chopped chestnuts, soybeans, flax, sesame, coffee, and some herbs and spices. It will also crack grain to any size—you can set the adjustment dial to any consistency from fine flour to meal to cereal grind or cracked grain. It isn't suitable for popcorn, tapioca pearls, or saw palmetto berries. To read more about millable materials, click here.
The milling head's conical steel burrs work grain with a shearing action to avoid the "crushing friction" that creates the high heat common in many small grain mills—temperatures that can destroy many of the nutrients in your flour. And unlike stone burrs, steel burrs won't gum up or glaze. One cup of fine flour can be produced in just two minutes when hand operated, or less than a minute with the 900 watt electric WonderMix motor base. (It takes about 2/3 cup of wheat to make a cup of fine flour.)

Because it doesn't grind with friction, the FGM's hand crank grain mill base turns easier than most hand operated mills. Overall time and effort are four times less than required by most hand mills, and most mills still won't produce flour as fine.
Manufactured in Germany, the Family Grain Mill is built with the durability to provide a lifetime of dependable use. Its body is made of super-tough ABS polymer, and its high-carbon stainless steel burrs are long lasting and easily replaceable.
Family Grain Mill components remove quickly for cleaning. The grain mill head disassembles completely in five seconds, so it's quick and easy to have your mill ready for its next use. And where many mills create a cloud of flour dust to settle everywhere, the FGM operates dust-free.
Motor Base
There is no longer any other power option besides the WonderMix base. The WonderMix base is both stronger and less expensive than the base that the Family Grain Mill people supplied previously, and it also has proven to be durable. So there’s really no drawback at all to using this motor base to power the Family Grain Mill accessories. If you purchase the WonderMix base, you don’t need to use it as your mixer. But if you did, you would find that it’s a very strong mixer (due in part to the way it transmits power from the motor to the bowl, not simply due to having high wattage). If you don’t want to use the WonderMix as a mixer, you could just stash the bowl and other accessories somewhere out of the way.

WHOLE GRAIN NUTRITION: HARVEST THE BENEFITS!
Imagine that for years, your children ate mainly candy. Imagine that you did, too. Imagine an entire nation on a candy diet. Imagine the health consequences.
Natural whole grains contain a myriad of health-essential nutrients, from proteins to vitamins and amino
acids. But "white flour" consists only of the starchy endosperm of the wheat kernel. In its natural form
the endosperm provides wholesome energy, but it's the least nutrient-rich part of the grain. Removed
are the nutrient-packed bran, wheat germ, and wheat germ oil. Then to make it extra white, industrial
processors go further, chemically bleaching it, and returning just enough of a few vitamins to stave
off beriberi and rickets. They're allowed to call the end product "Enriched Flour" but a truthful label
would read "Impoverished Flour." This snow white, denutritionalized substance is a commodity worth billions
of dollars annually to its merchandisers because of a commercially useful trait: Unlimited shelf life.
No matter how long it sits in the mass distribution channel, it can't go bad precisely because there's
actually nothing left in it that can go bad. Nutritionally, it's bad when bagged. A few companies have
grown enormously rich marketing this pseudo-food on the basis of convenience, ease, and its dazzling
white appearance. But a blind eye was turned to the consequences of replacing real whole grain flour
with something that looks special, yet is virtually devoid of nutrition. In essence, candy. So widely
has this nutritional travesty become accepted that we call it—and think of it as—wheat flour. But to
depart further from natural grain flour would scarcely be possible. Then to make matters worse, artificial
sweeteners, flavors and colors, appetite stimulants and preservatives are added to many of our foods.
"Artificial" tells you those things aren't naturally food. But have you ever wondered
what they actually
are
,
then
? Did you know some of them are actually petroleum derivatives? And what unintended side effects might
those complex counterfeit compounds have on us?
The human body is an absolute marvel; scientists have a long way to go to understand a tenth of how we work. But as capable and as resilient as our bodies are, common sense and history teach that we need wholesome, nutritious food to remain healthy and strong. The denatured byproducts being mass marketed today don't provide what we need, because they've been profoundly altered by processes in which real nutrition is considered last, or not at all.
There's a great solution to this problem. By grinding grains in your kitchen and using the whole grain
flour while it's fresh, you get the nutrition needed for strength and health. You also get far tastier
food, with genuine character—incomparably more satisfying than today's mass marketed pretenders. After
transitioning to whole grains, putting out a plate of white styro-bread will elicit comments like "Why
are you giving us
this
... and where's the
good stuff
?". Even flour labeled as "whole grain" in stores falls far short of what you can easily grind yourself,
because unless it's ground while you wait, the essential Vitamin E in true whole grain flour would go
rancid in days (meaning that it's probably been removed), and all nutrients begin steadily oxidizing-away
from exposure to oxygen as soon as grain is milled. What's in those bags is
not
whole grain flour if it's been sitting on a shelf for even a few days; that's literally impossible.
Making real food is more than doable, it's downright fun with help from Pleasant Hill Grain! A grain mill is the place to start. And to make whole grain bread quickly, easily and with consistently wonderful results, nothing beats a quality stand mixer that's capable of mixing and kneading bread that's ready to pop in the oven—quickly and without hand kneading. These machines make it easy to turn the corner to a far better and more enjoyable way of eating!

This is my second purchase of a Family Grain Mill. I bought the other one about 8 years ago, and replaced the burrs 3 times. I use it about 2-4 times per week. I like the flaker option, and have been making my own granola. I also like the hand-crank option, and have used it 4-5 times when we were camping, or when the power was out. It is easy to use, and not too tiring. The motor is a bit too loud, and I wish it had a finer grind, but overall, it is the best mill for my needs.
Since last week when my Family Grain Mill arrived, I have ground buckwheat and millet for baking gluten free bread. My family has had fresh homemade bread daily, prior to which, I had never baked a loaf of bread from scratch in my entire life (but I have made other baked goods)! My grade school child has been able to help me, which is a lot of fun! That's how light and easy it is to grind the grain with this mill! It's good The buckwheat and millet flour produced by the mill remains cool, and is wonderfully fine - the very first time it passes through the mill. No second passes are needed - yippee
Update: 4/17/20
Still using this product. Nice exercise if you choose to grind by hand, fun and educational as it is safe for kids to use (supervised) and easy to clean. I am still pleased with my purchase.
I'd rather spend a few dollars more the first time, than end up spending more in the long run and have to put up with a lot of problems along the way. The Family Grain mill I bought is a joy to use and makes great flour with no dust. Every mill I've been around makes a pretty good growling noise, that's just the grain being broken up into tiny bits. But this one is significantly quieter than others I've been around.
The FG mill is precisely manufactured, has proven to be tough, and it puts away easily. Plus I can replace the burrs when they eventually wear down. Not every mill allows you to do that.
I have used this mill mostly to make spelt flour (occasionally coffee beans). It works well; I can set it up and leave it to grind. It does get a bit covered in flour dust during use. It is SOOO easy to take apart and clean.
We got the hand base combo that was available with the mill and flaker attachments as well as the adapter to use on our Kitchen Aid mixer. Works wonders. Tried with the hand base just to test and was fast and easy. We use on the Kitchen Aid normally.
I bought the Family Grain Mill mostly for the flaker (and it's great for that) but making our own whole grain flour with the grinder attachment has turned out to be the most valuable part of the system for our family. The flour is perfect for bread making, our loaves rise high and the texture has been delightful.
Another nice plus is that the parts are very compact so they store super easy.
This mill works great. I use it to grind wheat berries so that I can make bread at home. With the hand mill I can even make flour when there is a power outage. I haven't used the meat grinder yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it out.
I have enjoyed grinding wheat berries with this mill. It has other attachments that increase its versatility in the kitchen. The only reason(s) I didn't give it an excellent rating are as follows. I was surprised at how flimsy the electrical cord is. Even though I haven't had a problem at all, the cord doesn't have a heavy duty quality to it, or a thick commercial type of covering in the event a knife falls on it (stored below the knife wall). The little marks indicating the fine- or coarseness of the grain are confusing. It is difficult to tell exactly what the degree of fineness will actually be. Also, the grain if I grind a lot warms up. While that hasn't been a problem for me, my subsequent research shows that is an issue for many serious bakers. I do not use it frequently. I am more of an occasional baker. All in all, I am happy with this mill.
Enjoy milling my own flour. I've experimented with a variety of gluten free nuts and beans. Great product and very easy to use and clean.
We really like our grain mill but there are two things that could be improved upon. First is that to get the flour to the consistency we like we have to milk it twice through. The second is that the wood base is for a square edge and since our countertops are rounded the mill moves around a bit as we mill it. For the price and versatility of using it as a hand crank or hook it up to a motor is the main reason we went with this mill.
