Hippo hammermills rapidly pulverize a wide range of materials from grain, beans, herbs and fibrous roots to minerals, plastics, glass, bone and recyclables. Materials enter the milling chamber and are impacted by hammers rotating at high speed. Size reduction occurs until particles can exit through the holes of a perforated screen covering the discharge. Interchangeable screens offer hole sizes ranging from 0.6mm to 25mm.
As a result of hammer milling, in addition to particle size reduction some materials (glass bottles and lobster shells, for example) experience a high degree of bulk reduction, creating storage and transport efficiencies.
Milling chambers are constructed of high strength cast iron plates with bolted construction that eliminates common stress points to prevent cracking. After extended use, this method of construction allows fast, easy, on-site replacement of worn parts. Built for the demands of commercial and industrial grinding, Hippo hammermills are fast, efficient and durable, and their low cost won't break your material processing budget.
In use across the U.S. and around the world, South-African made Hippo mills are available with horsepower ratings of 5 to 100 hp. The Hippo #57 commercial hammermill with a VFD is equipped with a 40 hp, 208/230/460VAC, 60hz, 3-phase inverter duty rated motor. The VFD is not pre-wired to the motor and can be programmed to reduce the rotor shaft rpm. Slowing the speed of the rotor shaft can increase the likelihood of getting a coarser grind in hemp and other products, while still utilizing the material handling fan to move product from the mill to the material collecting cyclone.
Hippo hammermills feature rigid hammers with replaceable tips of long wearing, impact and abrasion-resistant Bennox steel. The screen is located in the bottom half of the hammermill chamber, covering an arc of about 180°. Milled material is transported from the discharge of the mill by an impeller fan mounted on the drive shaft, and delivered to the cyclone and dust separator. Suction created by the material handling fan aids transport of the product through screen holes.
Stock interchangeable screens for the Hippo #57 hammermill are available with hole sizes of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm. The top half of the milling chamber swings open for full access to the hammers and screen, and screens can be changed out in just 30 seconds without tools.
Hippo mills are manufactured to high precision standards, with non-cast components cut by laser or plasma for excellent fit. High quality bearings are used, and lubricated with quality synthetic lubricant.
A high strength magnet is fitted to the feeding hopper, isolating harmful ferrous metal items before entering the mill and damaging the screen.
All Hippo mills are tested before shipping and are covered by a 1 year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

We’re very happy with our Model 1.5 Hippo hammer mill. It’s been trouble-free and reliable. Using a 1/4” metal screen we can produce in excess of 1,000 lbs of hemp powder per hour.
The mill is care-free compared to the high maintenance machines we used previously. The motor has ample horsepower to power through the industrial hemp, which is rougher than standard medical marijuana/cannabis plant material. The Hippo just doesn't doesn't bog down as our previous machines were prone to.
The industrial hemp is a sticky, glue-like substance with high oil content, so it’s important to us that the metal screens and system clean up easily after processing, and the Hippo's tool-less screen access is as easy as easy gets.
We’ve run the mill constantly for five months with no problems at all. If you want a well constructed and designed machine, buy a Hippo. Pleasant Hill was perfect to deal with, as well. Great experience all the way around.
We got the #69 Hippo to process hemp into a small particle for an ethanol extraction process to extract the cannabinoids (CBD). Using a 10mm screen in a 6-7 hour shift, we’re comfortably processing 3000 pounds per day. We could easily step up production output if needed.
With one added component, the Hippo is performing very well for us. When we first got it, the 60 HP motor was running at approximately 4700 RPM’s and grinding finer than we wanted. To control the speed of the motor we installed a variable frequency drive (VFD) and now the mill produces the ideal particle size for ethanol extraction of CBD. The revolutions per minute were reduced to 2300. We achieved this by reducing the frequency by 50% to 30HZ. Now the size of the particle is similar to that of material you would place in a pre roll cigarette. We normally run dry biomass however if a batch comes through with a slight increase in moisture content we can increase the HZ on the VFD to ensure the material runs through the mill cleanly.
Our milling room is about 1500 square feet, with a 12 foot ceiling. At the end of the shift there's some fine dust on the floor, which we just mop up. The 8 filter bag system installed on the mill works well in securing the majority of the dust created in processing. We use the tie that comes with the super sacks to secure the bag to the bottom of the cyclone. Once filled, we replace it with a new bag. We use compressed air to clean the internal and external parts of the mill.
The mill works wonderfully for our glass grinding project. We started with a .6mm screen but they actually produced particles finer than we wanted. We sized the screen up a little and got just the particle size we desired.
I’m an engineer and appreciate the basic design of the mill. It allows for consistent operation with very little down time. There are no proprietary parts and if replacement parts are needed they can be easily sourced. The solid cast iron construction has proven to be extremely strong and resistant to the rigorous use we’ve subjected the mill to. We plan to add a larger hopper and a conveyor system to eliminate the need for manual feeding.
Grandad bought a small Hippo hammer mill long before my time and we still use it on the farm. When we needed more capacity the longevity of that one made our decision easy, and it looks to me like they still build them the same way... heavy duty and well designed.
We process hemp biomass for CBD and THC extraction and we’re extremely pleased with our Hippo mill’s consistent and trouble-free performance.
We’re using the 6 & 10mm screens. We run 8 hour shifts and easily average 700-800 pounds of powder per hour.
The Hippo is ideal for processing hemp. We use it to mill oil rich buds for CBD extraction, and for THC extraction we feed the mill with fine leaf trimmings, no stems.
Our project in the city of Billings is grinding waste glass bottles. We recycling the ground glass as aggregate in concrete, keeping it out of the landfill and putting it to productive use.
To maintain full strength in the concrete we need a sand-like consistency without much dust. The Hippo grinder gives us what we need using the 8mm screen. We’re very happy with it, and the longevity looks very good. We also have ideas about modifying the hammer tips for shredding plastic jugs and PC motherboards.
This machine opens a lot of opportunities for moving into other green-environment projects. It’s a solid machine.
The Hippo's a great piece of equipment that fits well into our production process. And based on its very solid construction we look for it to serve us for many years. We process about 4,000 lbs. of wood chips in an eight hour day with the Hippo #1 model. The chunks range 1-6 inches in length going into the mill. The 6mm screen produces a powder that we compress into wood pellets for use in BBQ’s and wood stoves, and the 25mm screen makes landscaping mulch.
A good investment all around.
Can’t believe how little dust the mill is making. With all of our previous hammer mills dust was always a major issue. I guess it's an airflow thing, but whatever it is, I like it. Hippo's long history makes me feel good about parts availability in the future too. Good all around.
The cast iron plates on the mill really make a difference in their lifespan, when I compare the Hippo to welded mild steel mills I’ve run in the past. They wear a lot longer, and sections are easy to swap out.
Our customers require a very fine 60 mesh chick pea flour. With the 0.6mm screen, we’re getting flour that fine, and at a good rate of 1,800 lbs/hour. The Hippo #69 hammer mill was a good investment, living up to all expectations.
