Organic Brown Flax, 36 lbs.
Uses & History
Our brown flax seed (linum usitatissimum) is certified organic, non-GMO, triple-cleaned and useful for all kinds of cooking purposes. Brown flax has a mild, pleasantly nutty flavor. Enjoy the flavor and health benefits of flax by adding it to protein smoothies, juices, salads, cereals, casseroles, baked goods, and even desserts... the list is endless!
The outer layer of flaxseed is so hard and fibrous that we can’t actually digest it, even with extensive chewing, so grinding flax seed is essential to absorbing the powerhouse of nutrition it offers. We recommend using a coffee/seed mill to grind your seed shortly before using it. Ground flax is highly perishable and turns rancid quickly, so grinding small amounts as needed is recommended. Whole flax seeds can be stored in an airtight container for up to a year.
Flax has earned a great reputation, thanks to its plant lignans which promote heart health, maintain bone density, and balance estrogen which can help fend of and fight certain cancers. Flax seed is actually the richest source of plant lignans, containing up to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods!
Flax seed is also rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids which improve brain, eye, heart, bone and joint health. Omega-3 decreases inflammation, fights autoimmune diseases and depression, improves concentration, and so much more. Flaxseed is one of the best sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fat. Flax is one of the highest dietary sources of omega-3, surpassed only by chia seeds.
A common myth surrounding flax is that one color may be superior to the other, but nutritional studies have shown that brown and golden flax are virtually the same in their levels of omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and fiber. Brown and golden flax both contain about 3 grams of fiber. Brown flax seeds provide slightly more ALA, at 2.5 grams per tablespoon, while golden flax seeds contain 2.1 grams. A tablespoon of either type provides your entire daily recommended ALA intake.
Looking for ways to add fiber to your diet to improve your digestive health and maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels? Flax offers both soluble and insoluble fiber. Thanks to its soluble fiber content, ground flax seeds create a gummy consistency when mixed with water, so those on an egg-free diet can use flax as an egg replacement. To replace one egg, grind 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and mix with 3 tablespoons of water.
Flax oil, also known as linseed oil, is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, but the highly desirable lignans and fiber found in the whole seed are removed in the process of making flax oil. Flax oil is a delicate oil and oxidizes easily, so it’s best to use it raw. To keep the oil fresh, store it tightly sealed in the refrigerator.
Just one tablespoon of flaxseed per day will provide a good amount of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as a boost your intake of B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium.
Super-cleaned
All of our flax is triple-cleaned to ensure purity and protect your grain mill from any foreign objects. The cleaning process does not use water, any liquid chemicals or washing procedures. The flax is cleaned using a screener, destoning and gravity table as well as a color sorter. The flax is also not heat treated in any way. (Flax seed that isn't sufficiently cleaned may contain small stones that will damage or destroy a grain mill... not to mention that you don't want such things in your food!)
Shelf Life
Our organic brown flax seeds have a shelf life of 10+ years when unopened and stored in a cool, dark, dry environment.

I use a great deal of flax seed and have ordered it in bulk from various places through the years. I try to incorporate flax into recipes to increase the nutritional value of everyday foods. I put a tablespoon of ground flax in my oatmeal daily... and it makes a great addition to breads. I especially like the taste when used as a topping on my sourdough bread... love the crunchy, nutty toasted taste!
Your flax seed is very clean, shipped promptly, and arrived in excellent condition. This was my second experience with your company and I plan to continue using you for future purchases.
Got everything as ordered despite the crazy buying glut that has crippled so much for so many! Perfect shipping with wonderful product. Couldn’t be more pleased!!
Since then, personally and professinally, I've used and recommended fresh-ground flax seed. It is not convenient to find in verifiably-fresh condition and your product is excellent, fresh-- the most-important factor as molecular biology is proving, and most of all quick and convenient to get through PHG. We've already recommended you to others. Omega-3 ratios, serum levels, and their important effects will be more and more in the news, as has been the value of prebiotics such as flax seed. Thank you.
We use flax seeds in many dishes so getting a 25lb bag is very convenient. It comes well packaged, then I separate it in a number of freezer bags and keep them in the freezer. I then move one bag at a time in the fridge when it's time to grind and use them. Pleasant Hill Grain has a great service and I would deal with them again.
Best service, lowest shipping fees and—most importantly—the best organic brown flax seed one could dream to find.
I and my family are (pleasantly) 'addicted' to our couple of tablespoons dose of ground flax seed on our daily salads. We are four, and we need 25 pounds of this 'panacea' every six months, so it is very reassuring to know that Pleasant Hill Grain is always there for us.
After purchasing grains, canned foods, and survival products from Pleasant Hill Grain during the past ten or more years, I have nothing but praise for the service and quality they offer. Thank you Pleasant Hill Grain!!
This is excellent grain: Well packaged, clean, no bad kernels.
Very satisfied with this flax. Consistent quality throughout the bag. Absolutely no complaints.
Really appreciate the great, consistent quality of your organic flax seed.
Packaged very well, came before expected. Customer service is always great.
