Römertopf Classic Clay Oval Baker, 3-7 Qts.

Römertopf's Classic clay oval bakers are available in capacities of 3.1, 4.2, and 7.3 quarts. The exterior lid and base have beautiful embossed designs around the sides of the oval bakers. These clay dishes retain the heat and steam produced during the baking process, which speeds up baking time.

Römertopf vessels are made with all natural clay farmed from a region in Germany famous for its superior clay. Cooking with steam in natural clay vessels provides healthful, moist and tender results.

To use, first soak the baker lid for ten minutes and fill the bottom chamber with your meat, vegetables, dessert or bread dough. Place the soaked lid on the baker and put the Römertopf in a cold oven. Preheat the oven and bake your food. Steam will gently release from the moisture in the fine pores of the clay lid as the pot is heated. This moisture inside the baker will help keep your food moist and tender.

Meats prepared in the Römertopf will be succulent and juicy and have an appetizing, golden crust; soups can simmer slowly and gently for hours without forming a skin or crust; and the flavors of the many ingredients in stews and puddings meld together to an ideal blend when prepared in Römertopf bakers.

Römertopf bakers are also excellent for baking bread in! The soaked lid slowly releases steam into your bread as it bakes, and the moisture that naturally bakes out of your loaf will be kept inside your baking chamber. When you bake bread in a covered clay baker, there's no need to spritz your oven with water or to fill steam trays. To achieve a beautiful golden crust, we recommend removing the baker lid about ten minutes before the end of the baking time. Bread baked in covered Römertopf bakers boast a moist, tender crumb and crisp, chewy crust.

The 3.1 and 4.2 quart bottom vessels are lined with a glossy, chemical-free glass frit glaze. Because a glass lining would easily fracture on a surface as large as the 7.3 quart vessel, glass frit is instead mixed into the clay for the bottom vessel of the largest Römertopf. This manufacturing difference makes the interior of the largest vessel a darker color and less glossy than the smaller vessels. The glass frit in each of the vessels allows for easy and fast cleanup. The inside of the Römertopf lids are unglazed, allowing the clay to absorb moisture into its fine pores.

Römertopf products have passed all FDA testing and are free of harmful lead and cadmium.

All the Römertopf bakeware at Pleasant Hill Grain is handcrafted in Germany and safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave oven, and conventional oven.

  • “I can't believe how fast my order came! I thought about ordering from Amazon for two-day shipping but went with Pleasant Hill instead because I've always had great service. Pleasant Hill's prices were better than Amazon for the items I ordered, and it came just as fast.”

  • Gorgeous and spacious

After contemplating what size of clay baker to purchase, I opted for this large size thinking that I would reap the most benefit from being able to handle medium sized turkeys. I'm glad that I got it! Looking at it on the table now, I think I would not roast more than a 15 pounder in there to prevent problems. This size would also be great for a large roasting hen with plenty of space for veg. Duck and goose also come to mind, as the length of the oval would easily accomodate these birds. Now I just need to find a turkey! On as aesthetic note, the Roman figures and columns pressed on the clay are beautiful and if I work it right, will add to the "mystique" of the roasting experience.
