A must-have

The hopper extension is invaluable as a time-saver because it holds a lot of apples at one time instead of having to continually feed the apples through the grinder. I couldn't imagine using the grinder without it!

wasn't needed on the maxamizer

We bought this when we bought our maximizer press thinking it would be great to fill up the hopper and crank away. well we found out that you can't feed more than 3 apples at a time or they jam and it just spins so the hopper was not a benefit for the maximizer press. wish they would have told us when we bought it to save some money.

Moderator : Nathan, various factors including size, hardness and texture of a particular batch of apples can combine unpredictably in such a way that those apples will bridge in the hopper. Crusher and hopper work together well

The crusher is great, especially with the flywheel handle design allowing you to get up some momentum to really crush apples at a good clip. Easy to clean out afterward also. Assemble the handle carefully from the directions or the handle may not rotate freely. Be careful not to chip the paint--repaint quickly or rust will develop on the iron. The hopper allows rapid feeding into the crusher, and minimizes splashback from apple fragments/juice. As someone mentioned, it is pine and soft, so be careful not to strip out the screws by over tightening. It would be nice if the hopper came pre-finished (Butcher block non-toxic coating), which is what I did to it prior to assembly. The whole unit arrived in two boxes several days earlier than I expected. Excellent service! I also built the 2x4 support suggestion provided, to mount the unit onto, which is working well (2 weekends of use so far).

The grinder designed to swing over the press is unique but is made even more useful when you add the hopper. It takes only a few seconds to assemble and install. Well worth the money for the efficiency when making cider!

Expanding the Maximizer.

I built a full cider processing machine which includes the Maximizer and hopper and a press in a single but very heavy solid oak frame. The hopper is useful and makes it possible for 2 people to operate the unit at one time. Processing several hundred pounds of apples in one day is a breeze. The hopper is made of pine and I don't expect the hopper to last more than a few years since it's made out of pine and the attachment to the Maximizer it undoubtably its weakest point. I used a water proof glue to assemble it and wingnuts to attach the two together. When it breaks I will make one out of oak, just didn't have the time this season.
