Some sourdough breads can take days and it's convenient to leave the dough during this time in the mixing bowl, especially with the optional lid - I think the lid might be a special order and I encourage PHG to offer it as a standard item if they haven't done so already. Now, if you want to start a second dough while the first bowl is used it's convenient to have a second bowl. Do you absolutely need it? No. Do you want it? Absolutely! Especially with a lid.
Tip: If you want to temperature control dough fermentation put the covered mixing bowl in a water bath and control the water temperature with a sous vide precession cooker (about $100). Works, as long as you need a higher temperatures than your room temp.
I understand the other review having difficulty getting the dough out of the corners. This happens when the dough is too soft (wet) or weak in gluten (e. g. rye, some non bread wheat flours). In this case I suggest the use of the optional paddle, which solves this problem and mixes soft doughs properly. The spiral is great most of the time, however not always.
For me part of the beauty of the Alpha Mixer is its flexibility - adding the bowl and paddle increases the usefulness of the mixer (https: //pleasanthillgrain. com/stirring-paddle-haussler-alpha-mixer).
Opinion: You need the paddle and want the extra bowl.
If you only want to mix dough and a double recipe of it at home this is a workhorse. Two things not great is sometimes it doesn’t get all the ingredients out from the edge of the bowl and sometimes the dough travels up past the dough hook guard. Otherwise it’s great. Takes some learning to get the dough hook on and off.
Another thing I’m glad I splurged on. Kind of an indulgence but it makes life a lot easier having it.

I've had my mixer for more than a year now, and I love the quality. You pick up this bowl, and you can feel the heavy construction, just like the mixer itself. I bought the additional bowl so I could have two batches of dough in process at the same time. It's my hack for having larger production capability without needing to buy a larger mixer. Love it.
It's a bowl. It's a heavy bowl. It's a heavy duty bowl. It's a big bowl. It's a well built bowl. It's a great bowl. Boy, is it a bowl.
Only negative I can see, is that when you take it out of the dishwasher there will be a significant amount of water that has accumulated in the curled over lip of the bowl and the mechanism that attaches the bowl to the base. And, well, the price. It is a bit dear. But a good bowl over all.
