Clearance: Marcato Marga Mulino Flaker
This is an R1 clearance item. Please check the tables below to see how we rate our clearance items.
Marcato's recently updated Marga Mulino flaker has been on the market for several years, and is one of the better-known flakers on the market. Marcato describes it as a flour mill as well, but in our view it really isn't practical at all as a flour mill because the effort level is very high, the process is slow (requiring multiple re-grinds), and the flour produced is very coarse. We can recommend it as a grain grinder only if your requirement is for a coarse meal texture, not flour—and even then, in our opinion there are much better choices for meal or flour.
What we can recommend the Marga for, is flaking grain. The six-position adjustability of its roller gap lets you select a setting perfect for your flaking needs, and the Marga maintains consistency of flake thickness and size as well as, or better than, any home flaker we've seen.
“I read reviews and reviews and looked at different sites, but I came back to PHG and I'm glad I did. I had a question, I called the 800# and a friendly, informative person answered it... This is a well made, beautiful tool and I would buy it again. I shouldn't have waited so long!”
– Lisa L., OK
The frame of the Marcato Marga Mulino is heavy duty chromed steel and the rollers are anodized alloy. Hopper capacity is 14 oz. (based on oats), and the Marga flaker has a three year manufacturer's warranty.
Whether baked, cooked or raw, food tastes soooo much better when it's fresh—and oats are no exception! Our customers use their grain flakers more to make fresh oatmeal from oat groats than for any other use, and love the delicious difference they get with just-rolled.
A variety of other grains can be flaked with the Marga flaker, including wheat, rye, barley and millet, with a little preparation. These grains are normally dry and hard. To soften them, hold them under running water briefly in a strainer. Then spread the grains on a cloth or towel to let them dry over night or for at least 3-4 hours. This time will vary depending on the grain used, but a little experimentation will help optimize the process. The softened grain will flatten nicely into flakes. At the same time this contact with water starts an enzymatic process which makes it easier for your metabolism to assimilate the minerals in the grain.
The Marga has a low discharge height, and the clear plastic tray shown in the video is not included. The motor drive in the video also is not included.

Expanded Ratings Descriptions
|R1||Very close scrutiny is required to tell that the item isn’t brand new. Working surfaces may show slight wear; for example, the bottom-inside of a Bosch mixer bowl may show swirl marks because Bosch mixer whips are designed to “float” against bottom of bowl. Non-working surfaces (cabinet, control panel) look essentially new. Carton may not be perfect.|
|R2||Typically has a small scuff or mark on a non-working surface like a mixer cabinet or the top of a pressure cooker lid.|
|FR||Mostly returned items which have been brought fully up to new-equipment performance specs at the factory.|
|D||Demonstration items have been operated briefly at Pleasant Hill Grain.|
|DIS||These items have never been used but we no longer sell them at full price in our store because it was discontinued by us or by the manufacturer.|
|U||Has had light use.|
|SD||Has moderate damage on a non-working surface, such as a scratch or dent in the housing.|
|NOS||A brand new item that isn't the newest model.|

By Gary S. in TX on 7/20/2018 - Verified BuyerI purchased the Flaker Mill attachment for the KitchenAid first and was not happy with the thickness of the oat flakes, especially for oatmeal cookies. The oat flakes were too thick in my opinion and the KitchenAid Mill attachment does not have any adjustments. Additionally, the roller for the KitchenAid attachment is only about 1 inch or so wide so it is rather slow at processing the oats. The roller for the Marcato Marga Mulino Flaker however is much wider, probably 5 or six inches and the Marcato Marga Mulino Flaker has an adjustment knob where you can change the thickness of the flakes all the way down to a coarse flour, (although it is too coarse for flour in my opinion). Additionally, because the floor is so much wider it processes the oats much faster than the KitchenAid flaker attachment even though it is done manually with a crank handle. Although the KitchenAid works as advertised I would rate the KitchenAid at a 3 compared to the Marcato Marga Mulino Flaker which I rate as a 5.3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. Did you?
By Ariela in KCMO on 2/6/2019 - Verified BuyerI've been using the Marga flaker for more than 20 years. Even replaced my original 5 years ago. I noticed that there was a motor available for it, and since I flake kamut and spelt I ordered one, only to find out that the motor fit only a redesigned flaker. I was going to return it, but decided instead to buy the redesigned model and give mine away to a friend who ate oatmeal. The flaker arrived the next day! The new design is easier to use and clean. Since it doesn't have a grain catcher it would have been good to include a tray similar to the ones shown in the brochure. Luckily I had a small rectangular tray that would fit under the grain exit chute.1 person found this review helpful. Did you?
By Freddy the Flaker on 7/30/2018 - Verified BuyerFirst, this is my first whack at mulling or flaking after considering it for years. Who needs another chunk of iron in the kitchen, am I right? No, I am wrong. The difference in freshly flaked oats (to you preference) is totally worth it. Absolutely delicious.
Second, Marcato. Works a treat. I have their pasta roller. The flaker is just as bulletproof as the pasta roller. Seems like this will last considerably longer than an Italian constitution. Whacka whacka

By Lisa L. in OK on 10/5/2016 - Verified BuyerI waited a long time to finally order my new Marcato Marga. I read reviews and reviews and looked at different sites, but I came back to PHG and I'm glad I did. I had a question, I called the 800# and a friendly, informative person answered it. Ok, so I ordered and it was a few days later and "It" arrived! Of course I opened the package and immediately read the manual, in English, and put it together, easy. I then pulled out some whole barley and flaked away! it was easy to crank the handle and I had flaked barley for cereal! This is a well made, beautiful tool and I would buy it again. I shouldn't have waited so long!10 out of 11 people found this review helpful. Did you?
By Michael W. in MI on 9/3/2017 - Verified BuyerA very solid unit. I bought the motor also which really helps. I can make a bag of oat flakes in just a few minutes. A final setting of 2.5 makes perfect rolled oats.3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Did you?
