Skeppshult Cast Iron Spice Grinder, Swing Style

The Skeppshult Cast Iron "Swing" Spice Mill is designed by Carl&Carl of Denmark and handmade in Sweden. The mill (or "kryddkvarn" in Swedish) comes with either a beech, oak or walnut lid. A strong rubber seal is fit into a groove on the inside of the lid so your pepper and spices will stay fresh longer. A notch is crafted into the rim of the bowl to make it easy to remove the lid.
One cast iron spice grinder bowl nests into the other with a lid covering the top bowl. This unique design allows you to store whole peppercorn in the top bowl, and pour a portion into the bottom bowl when you're ready to grind it. The inside base of the bottom bowl and outside base of the top bowl are finished with a coarse cast iron pattern which creates excellent burrs for grinding when rubbed against each other. The grinder is also excellent for herbs, other dry spices, and flax seed.

The base of the Skeppshult cast iron spice mill has a gentle curve to it, so while it sits upright, it swings slightly in a circular pattern when bumped—which we think is pretty neat! The bowl is bottom heavy so it easily stays upright.

Bowl dimensions, when nested and without lid:
Outside: 3" diameter, 2.75" high
Inside: 2.25" diameter, 1.75" deep
About Skeppshult
Skeppshult of Sweden manufactures artisanal cast iron cookware and cook's tools from strictly controlled raw materials in their factory in Småland. Made without harmful chemicals, their products have an exceptionally long life span, which explains how they can provide a 25 year cast iron warranty. Their natural and environmentally friendly cast iron products are made without harmful chemicals and require little maintenance.
Skeppshult's factory operates the only remaining foundry in Scandinavia making household products in cast iron. Many phases in the manufacturing are still pure hand craftsmanship and dependent upon great professional skill. Undergoing an average of ten quality control inspections before completion, your Skeppshult products will withstand year after year of heavy use.
Carl E. Andersson established his foundry on the shores of the Nissan river in 1906. Much has happened since then, but Skeppshult's commitment to fine craftsmanship remains strong. In an age of mass-produced mediocrity, a Skeppshult cast iron piece is a connection to a timeless standard of excellence. A Skeppshult pan or kitchen accessory is both a tool and an inspiration—an investment you'll never regret.

Although expensive for its size, this tool does the job very well and it feels good to use something of high quality. I use mine for hand grinding fresh spices, especially when making a batch of chai tea. I will never use pre-made store bought ground spice powders again! For best results, briefly heat the iron to bring out the scented oils in the spices you're grinding.
It does grind well so I can put my Krups coffee/spice machine in storage. Just as important for me is the "basic" operation, the same enjoyment when using an old Freud handsaw for most wood cutting. And as opposed to a mortar and pestle, one doesn't need to chase coriander seeds around the countertop.
Grinding pepper/spices is easy with this tool. Also the interesting design makes it a great conversation piece. I now have another task to give dinner guests who arrive early.
I like to grind my own spice mixes but in small quantities for immediate use, this is so much easier and the clean-up quicker than an electric machine! (plus not using electricity....a win-win!)
For when you want to quickly coarsely grind seeds and spices (say, bruising some fennel seeds for a tomato sauce or coriander seeds for the curry, cracking some peppercorns for a hunk of meat... ) It is possible to muscle the seeds down to a powder but it is a workout. And it's a sturdy, quality, attractive object in any case.
Craftsmanship to last a lifetime.
IT'S A JOY TO HAVE AROUND TO GRIND JUST WHAT I NEEED AND MY SPICE IS ALWAYS FREASH THE FOOD JUST GOT EVEN MORE BETTER. ; -}
This pepper mill is not only the best tool for the job, it’s fun to use. Love the weight in my hand and how the rocking does the work.
Whether it be a small amount or more, it grinds like your hands were a fine tuned machine! Such a well made item. Shipping was outstanding, fast and secure.
Love this spice grinder. Works wonderfully and has a nice feel! The bonus of storage under the lid is great. Well-made product.
