Organic Hulled White Sesame Seeds, 29 lbs.
Our sesame seeds are certified organic and perfect for all baking and cooking purposes.
Convenient & safe storage
Our sesame seeds are certified organic and non-GMO, and come in six-gallon buckets (or pails... another word for the same container), containing 29 lbs. net weight. When you store sesame seeds at home, they need to be protected in a couple of ways. First, they need to be protected from a variety of little critters who'd like to get to it before you do. Weevils and rodents, for example. You also need to protect your sesame seeds from picking up excessive additional moisture, which can be drawn from the atmosphere. The buckets our sesame seeds come in provide full protection against these storage risks. They have airtight gasket-sealed lids and oxygen absorber packets that remove the oxygen from the air in the bucket after we put the lid on. Our buckets safely lock out pests, so your white sesame seeds enjoy complete peace and quiet until you want to use them. Note: If you don't already have a bucket lid removal tool, they make lid removal easy.
Super-cleaned
All of our sesame seeds are cleaned to ensure purity. Our sesame seeds are cleaned to 99.99% purity by weight. To clean, the sesame seeds are processed using a screener, gravity table, de-stoner, and magnets. Achieving this level of quality may require further processing yet, through a color sorter. No liquids, soaps or additives of any kind are used in the cleaning process.
Shelf Life
Our organic hulled sesame seeds have a shelf life of 10+ years when unopened and stored in a cool, dark, dry environment.
Non-GMO
All of Pleasant Hill Grain's grains and seeds are natural (non-GMO). Also, PHG does not sell any grains, beans, lentils, pulses or seeds sourced from China.
Uses & History
The sesame plant (Sesamum Indicum) is native to Asia and Eastern Africa, and is mostly grown in Asian countries today. Sesame seeds are grown in a variety of colors including black, white, red and brown. The white sesame seeds we offer on this page are grown in India.
The seeds are harvested from pods that look similar to okra. To harvest the seeds the pods are first dried, causing them to open, and then shaken so the seeds fall free. Seeds that have had their outer layer (called the hull) removed are referred to either as dehulled or hulled. Seeds with the hull still intact are referred to as unhulled or hulled. We know, it’s confusing that the word “hulled” is used either way! The seeds on this page have had their hulls removed.
Sesame seeds are an excellent source of the essential minerals copper, zinc, magnesium, iron, and calcium. They’re also high in B-complex vitamins, and polyunsaturated fats. Their antioxidant properties can help strengthen your immune system; and their high level of selenium make them especially good for improving thyroid health.
Sesame seeds are mildly sweet with a nutty flavor. Sometimes they’re sprinkled on top of foods to add a slight crunch, and subtle flavor, as on hamburger buns or bagels. They can also be added to salads, mixed into muffins, blended into smoothies, stirred into yogurt, or sprinkled over steamed vegetables, or dessert. They’re an easy, healthful addition to many foods!
Tahini is a smooth paste made of ground sesame seeds. Oil can be added to thin the paste down, and salt can be used for seasoning. Any type of sesame seed can be used to make tahini, whether they’re black or white, uhulled or hulled, toasted, sprouted, or raw–each will impart a different flavor to the tahini, but it’s typically made with hulled white sesame seeds, like we have for sale on this page. Tahini is a major ingredient in hummus, and can also be used as a dip, in salad dressing, or to flavor ice cream or baked desserts! Tahini is a staple condiment in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking.
A seed grinder works well for grinding small quantities of sesame seeds, or if you’re grinding a larger quantity the Wonder Junior Mill, a food processor, or blender all work well.
Sesame seeds are prized for their high oil content. Sesame oil is relatively stable, meaning that it won’t go rancid quickly, and it’s good for high heat cooking, like stir-fries. The oil is sometimes used in recipes simply for its slight almond-like flavor.
