Organic Brown Flax, 1.75 lbs.
Our brown flax seed (linum usitatissimum) is certified organic, non-GMO, triple-cleaned and useful for all kinds of cooking purposes. Brown flax has a mild, pleasantly nutty flavor. Enjoy the flavor and health benefits of flax by adding it to protein smoothies, juices, salads, cereals, casseroles, baked goods, and even desserts... the list is endless!
The outer layer of flaxseed is so hard and fibrous that we can’t actually digest it, even with extensive chewing, so grinding flax seed is essential to absorbing the powerhouse of nutrition it offers. We recommend using ato grind your seed shortly before using it. Ground flax is highly perishable and turns rancid quickly, so grinding small amounts as needed is recommended. Whole flax seeds can be stored in an airtight container for up to a year.
Flax has earned a great reputation, thanks to its plant lignans which promote heart health, maintain bone density, and balance estrogen which can help fend of and fight certain cancers. Flax seed is actually the richest source of plant lignans, containing up to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods!
Flax seed is also rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids which improve brain, eye, heart, bone and joint health. Omega-3 decreases inflammation, fights autoimmune diseases and depression, improves concentration, and so much more. Flaxseed is one of the best sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fat. Flax is one of the highest dietary sources of omega-3, surpassed only by chia seeds.
“Best service, lowest shipping fees and—most importantly—the best organic brown flax seed one could dream to find.”
– Francesco R., VA
A common myth surrounding flax is that one color may be superior to the other, but nutritional studies have shown that brown and golden flax are virtually the same in their levels of omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and fiber. Brown and golden flax both contain about 3 grams of fiber. Brown flax seeds provide slightly more ALA, at 2.5 grams per tablespoon, while golden flax seeds contain 2.1 grams. A tablespoon of either type provides your entire daily recommended ALA intake.
Looking for ways to add fiber to your diet to improve your digestive health and maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels? Flax offers both soluble and insoluble fiber. Thanks to its soluble fiber content, ground flax seeds create a gummy consistency when mixed with water, so those on an egg-free diet can use flax as an egg replacement. To replace one egg, grind 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and mix with 3 tablespoons of water.
Flax oil, also known as linseed oil, is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, but the highly desirable lignans and fiber found in the whole seed are removed in the process of making flax oil. Flax oil is a delicate oil and oxidizes easily, so it’s best to use it raw. To keep the oil fresh, store it tightly sealed in the refrigerator.
Just one tablespoon of flaxseed per day will provide a good amount of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as a boost your intake of B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium.
Super-Cleaned: All of our flax is triple-cleaned to ensure purity and protect your grain mill from any foreign objects. The cleaning process does not use water, any liquid chemicals or washing procedures. The flax is cleaned using a screener, destoning and gravity table as well as a color sorter. The flax is also not heat treated in any way. (Flax seed that isn't sufficiently cleaned may contain small stones that will damage or destroy a grain mill... not to mention that you don't want such things in your food!)
Non-GMO: All of Pleasant Hill Grain's whole grain products are natural (non-GMO).

By William C. in UT on 4/24/2017 - Verified BuyerPleasant Hill Grain is an excellent source for organic, non-GMO, brown flax seeds. I ordered seven bags (a 5-6 month supply for me) and the NutriMill Mini-Seed/Coffee Mill, all of which came with free shipping in an expeditious manner. I had been concerned about freshness and shelf life, but the seeds I received have a freshness date one year out.
I grind two level tablespoons of seeds with the amazingly simple, efficient mill to mix into my organic oatmeal every morning; they add a delightful texture and nutty flavor to the oatmeal, to say nothing of the many health benefits. My primary objective here is lowering of my blood pressure, which scientific studies have proven to be substantial with two tablespoons/day of ground flax seed.
The customer support from Pleasant Hill Grain is superb. In my case, I emailed with Bonnie. She was very responsive and helpful with information, unlike so many companies that take two days, if ever, to respond. In other words, she genuinely cared and went the extra mile to be supportive.
These are the reasons, along with value for my money, that I give Pleasant Hill Grain an excellent rating. Was this review helpful to you?
