Hippo No. 1 Hammer Mill

The Hippo hammer mill features cast iron housing plates with bolt-together construction that eliminates common stress points to prevent cracking. After extended use, this method of construction allows fast, easy, on-site replacement of worn parts. Heavy duty in every way, if there was ever a hammer mill that you don't need to baby, the Hippo is it.

Material is fed directly onto the tips of the rotating hammers in the direction of hammer rotation. The rigid beater centers, each with replaceable tips, makes up the rotor. The screen is located in the bottom half of the hammer mill housing and covers an arc of approximately 180°. Milled material is transported from the discharge of the mill housing via a separate four-bladed fan mounted on the drive shaft and delivered to the cyclone and two-way bagging attachment. A wide range of alternative screens is available.

The Hippo No. 1 hammer mill is usually supplied with a material handling fan (air conveyor), but can be ordered without it.

All Hippo mills are manufactured to high precision standards. Parts not cast are laser or plasma cut to exact tolerance. Parts are still supplied for mills manufactured as early as 1929 when the first Hippo mill was produced.

High quality bearings are used on all mills and for industrial use, lubricators can be included as an option. Every Hippo that leaves the factory is lubricated with quality synthetic lubricant. High tensile fasteners are used throughout.

Hammer mill tips are laser-cut from durable BENNOX steel. HARDOX or ROCLAST steel tips are optionally supplied.

A high strength magnet is fitted to the feeding hopper, isolating harmful ferrous metal items before entering the mill and damaging the screen.

All Hippo mills are tested prior to shipping and are covered by a 12 month warranty. A three year unlimited warranty is provided on all non-rotating cast iron parts for milling grain and feeds, no matter how many hours are milled.

Free test grinding: Pleasant Hill Grain has extensive milling experience and can make recommendations for a wide range of grinding needs. We can also test mill samples of your materials; please call or email to make arrangements.

The prices above are for the Hippo #1 hammer mill, specified motor, material handling fan (air conveyor), collecting cyclone and dust bag system.

Due to the range of setup options available, orders for Hippo hammer mills are taken by phone. Please call for pricing on a motor starter, screens, crate fee and shipping costs by truck or freight forwarder.

Dimensions and weight for the #L63 and Mammouth mills are based on the mill without air conveyor or motor. The dimensions and weight for all the other models is based on the mill with air conveyor and no motor.

Grandad bought a small Hippo hammer mill long before my time and we still use it on the farm. When we needed more capacity the longevity of that one made our decision easy, and it looks to me like they still build them the same way... heavy duty and well designed.

We don’t have any problems with the housings cracking from vibration with the Hippo mills—something that was always a headache with our other hammer mills. We recommend Hippo to anyone who's looking.

The cast iron plates on the mill really make a difference in their lifespan, when I compare the Hippo to welded mild steel mills I’ve run in the past. They wear a lot longer, and sections are easy to swap out.
