Clearance: Family Grain Mill Flaker Head
This is an R1 clearance item. Please check the table below to see how we rate our clearance items.
Note: The product images on this page are of a new item, with the exception of any images marked “Clearance item”.

The Flaker Mill head flakes soft grains and is popular for fresh homemade oatmeal, making a hearty flake from oat groats (oats with the hulls removed) that's thicker and chewier than store-bought flaked oats. Hopper is 6 x 3.5 inches (dia. x height).
Oats are a naturally soft grain and more of our customers roll oats than any other grain in their Family Grain Mill flaker—but many other grains including wheat, rye, barley and millet can be flaked too, with a little preparation. These grains are hard and brittle, and would normally shatter rather than crush. To soften them, hold them under running water briefly in a strainer. Then spread the grains on a cloth or towel to let them dry over night or for 3-4 hours. This time will vary depending on the grain used, but a little experimentation will help optimize the process. The softened grain will crush and flatten, rather than shattering. At the same time this contact with water starts an enzymatic process which makes it easier for you to assimilate the minerals in the grain.

This item is the flaking attachment only. Manual and electric drive bases are available separately.
This flaker also fits the WonderMix stand mixer, and with available adapters will fit the Bosch Universal, Bosch Compact, Bosch Styline, KitchenAid, Ankarsum/Electrolux and Viking.

This flaker is amazing. With the addition of the adapter for my Bosch Universal Plus it ran smoothly and turned out oat groats crushed to resemble what we all recognize as oatmeal but unlike store bought oatmeal these are fresh and bursting with nutrients. I sealed what I processed in a mason jar and used my vacuum sealer to keep as fresh as the day I processed them. Love this flaker and the Bosch adapter. Thank you for these great products!
We bought our flaker and grain grinder in 2004 and they have stood the test of time. Our daughter is now 22 and out on her own and requested her own flaker and grinder. Once you start flaking/grinding from whole grain, you can't go back. The flavor is just so superior.
I bought this on 1/9/2012 and it's been great, and functioned flawlessly. I started putting my Universal away in its cabinet, though, so I bought a FlicFloc manual flaker. It's definitely slower and if I have the Universal out I still definitely still use this fine accessory.
I use the grain mill every week, for years. I always make our own bread. I added the flaker. Very nice. Easy to switch heads. I only grind enough for one meal. Great taste.
I've only used the flaker a few times so far, but it works great for oats. They are so tasty fresh milled! Easy to set up and use also.
Nothing beats the flavor and texture of freshly flaked/flocked oats for baking, oatmeal, muesli, or other…and the classic “Jupiter system”/Family Grain Mill flaker head has been an economical and versatile solution for decades. We’ve made muesli at home forever, and the FGM flaker head works beautifully both with the hand-crank plate and the power base. It can’t flake the wide variety of grains that I could with my now-gone Eschenfelder…but I use the FGM flaker on rye with good results by lightly moistening the grains with a method close to PHG’s recommended one. I make a 7-day supply of muesli at a time, with flaked oats, rye, and barley, though admit I buy the barley flakes from a supplier in my region, not having been able to find a moistening method that produces the flake I like. When flaking say 4-8 cups of oats for weekly baking and muesli, I use a teaspoon to nudge the long pointy groats toward the throat of the flaking roller, as they have a tendency to logjam if the hopper is half full to full. But it’s a pleasant little task. I bought the adapter for the Bosch mixer but have never tried it with the flaker—the little Jupiter/FGM power base works so well.
Like every product I’ve ordered from Pleasant Hill, this one didn’t disappoint. It’s very hard to find organic oat groats and I trust Pleasant Hill's product to be genuinely organic and of top quality. They are clean and tasty! I bought the flaker to go with my Family Grain Mill and I use my MockMill grinder to make perfect oat groats. Like all Pleasant Hill products, I highly recommend!!
I grew some hulless oats last season and have used this flaker to roll them for oatmeal and it works exactly as advertised
I've been looking for a way to flake oats. I watched a demo. Looking forward to using.
