The water filters on this page are identical to the standard Berkey Water Purifiers except that they have Super Sterasyl ceramic filtration elements and do not include the standard Black Berkey purifier elements. Please see our main Berkey Water Purifier-Filters page for full description of the Berkey purifiers.
Berkey® Water Products are divided into two categories: Filters and Purifiers. The difference between filters and purifiers is defined by the EPA: A filter must be capable of “Log 4" contaminant reduction, and a purifier must be capable of a “Log 7" contaminant reduction. Log 4 (simple filtration) means at least 99.99% of contaminants are removed, leaving no more than 1 part per ten thousand of the original contaminant.
The systems shown on this page are equipped with ceramic filter elements and offer the “filtration level" of contaminant reduction. Ceramic filtration is entirely sufficient for many conditions.
The higher “purification” reduction of Log 7 means that 99.99999% of contaminants are removed, leaving no more than 1 part per ten million of the original contaminant (1000x the effectiveness of the “filter” specification). Berkey® Systems using Black Berkey® purifying elements achieve the "purifier level" of performance and will provide ultra-pure water not only in normal conditions, but also in circumstances of extreme and highly dangerous contamination. Features of Super Sterasyl ceramic filtration elements:
- Silver impregnated to inhibit bacterial growth
- Contains granulated activated carbon to reduce chemical and organic compounds
- Each element will filter up to 535 gallons, depending on water turbidity
- Can be cleaned many times with a soft brush or Scotch Brite pad
The manufacturer recommends replacing the Super Sterasyl™Ceramic Filtration Elements after filtering 535 gallons of water, or after six months of use, whichever comes first.
Optional PF-4 Reduction Elements: The optional PF-4 elements are designed to be used in conjunction with the ceramic filter elements. They reduce MTBE, fluoride, lead and arsenic. They are attached on the underside of the upper (reservoir) tank, directly underneath each of the ceramic filter elements that are attached inside the reservoir. (To further clarify the PF-4 installation, this means that the PF-4 filter elements are positioned within the filtered-water tank, and when the filtered-water tank is full, the PF-4 elements will be submerged).
Note: Berkey purifiers aren't yet available for shipment to Iowa, and some systems cannot be shipped to California. Unlike any other state in the union, Iowa doesn't accept the results of any labs but their own, and their recurring annual lab fees are prohibitively inflated. The State of California, uniquely, says we can ship the stainless Travel Berkey into the state, but not the larger stainless systems. Californians also may order the Berkey Light system. Of course, any Berkey system may actually be used anywhere. More details of these regulatory novelties can be seen here.
